Processes and tools

Processes and tools, both Hilde and I have rather chaotic minds. We wander very easily. Not only when we are thinking, but also when talking to someone. We can go off on a tangent, or as we say in Dutch from scratch on the branch. It can be difficult to follow. But when we talk to each other, we are surprisingly good at keeping up with all the bends and curls of the conversation.

Chaotic Minds

Ideas just jump into our minds and often we follow them to see where they will bring us. Sometimes we have to come back, because we are at a dead end. Other times we end up with a better and greater idea than we could have even imagined before. And that is where the Processes and Tools come into play.

Don't let your Tools become your Process.

We have to deliver, hence the entrance of Processes and tools

This is all just nice and fun. But it basically means that we need to contain ourselves while working on a daily basis. There are times that we can go loose and come up with whatever we want to. But as for every business, we have to deliver a lot of finished products, courses, content, etc.

That is why we are using tools to keep ourselves focused and productive. Not only the Trello board that I showed on our YT video. Click to watch. And the themes for our long form content that I talked about in our Podcast. Click to listen. But also and very much so for all the other things that we do.

But besides the tools, processes are also really important in the way we work together. And although the steps are not carved in stone, or even put on paper or on screen, we know both what they are and we adhere to them to a certain extent.

What is a process?

noun: a series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end. We are not always aware of it, but we use processes in every aspect of our life. For example: doing the dishes.  There are a few steps involved, like unloading and loading the dishwasher, adding the detergent, choosing and starting a program.

There is not much question about the steps you need to take to wash your dishes. The discussion starts when you are not the only one doing it and you take the same steps in a different order. You can imagine the confusion and even mistakes.

The Problem is Minor when doing the Dishes

I always start with unloading the lower tray, and then loading it again before I unload the upper tray. My husband unloads the complete dishwasher before starting to load again. When we first were together, we had times that we did half of the dishes twice.  Because my husband assumed that the upper tray was already loaded with dirty dishes. While in fact they still had to be unloaded.

The problem is minor when doing the dishes. But when you mess up a process in your business, the repercussions can be more serious.

Let’s say for example that we created a funnel for a new free product. But before testing it, one of us publishes it. People want the product that we offer, but because of our lack of testing, the delivery fails. That can cause serious problems for our company in the future.

Get Your Processes and tools in Place

One important thing that we want to emphasize in the entirety of your business is that you have to make sure that you have the steps right before you bring in the tools.

People often think that implementing software tools is the answer to many of the problems in companies. But let us tell you that software has the tendency to expose and magnify any faults and gaps in your processes.

Our recommendation is that you get your processes in place before you start to automate.
