Keep it Simple - Trello to the rescue

Trello to the Rescue, or how this amazing tool helped our daughter when she was getting overwhelmed.

It was her first year in college...

I was working in my new office on the second floor for the first time last week when my oldest daughter stepped in. I could see that she had something on her mind, so I closed up my computer and listened. She didn’t come to talk to me for herself.  Apparently her sister had been struggling with her studies the last couple of weeks.  But for some reason hadn’t dared to tell us.

It’s not that we are these super harsh parents, I like to think of us as understanding and motivating. Turned out that she didn’t want to let us down, bless her!
It has been a difficult year for her, as for several other young people. This year was her first year at college, in the midst of lockdown rules and restrictions. They had to figure everything out on their own, even the support of peers was lacking because they just didn’t know each other.

And now, shortly before the exams start she feels completely overwhelmed.

Nothing really worked.

So after the conversation with her sister, I was thinking about a way for me to help her. I know she will benefit greatly from professional help to cope with things, especially because she is gifted, is diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia and stuff.

In the past I had tried to assist with schoolwork, especially planning. And we had thought multiple times that we had found something that would really make a difference, but nothing really worked.

And then it hit me. Hilde and I are big fans of a planning tool called Trello. We use it for literally everything in our business!

So I asked my youngest if I could help her and when she gave me permission I showed her how we use Trello. We set up a board for her medialab course where she needs to complete a few projects. Immediately she saw the possibilities and she was ecstatic about the tool.

We kept it simple as you can see in the picture. We created 5 lists (projects – To do – Review – Hand in – Finished) and then we created a card for each project that she needs to complete. Every card has a checklist with all the actions she has to do. Each time she finishes an action, she can cross it out. That is such a nice feeling when you can cross out items on your to do list.

The cards travel through the board, they go from list to list until they arrive at the finished list. She has a clear view of the due dates and sees at a glance what the status of her projects is and when they are due.

A new Trello fan is born

This one board got her started and she now has boards for almost everything to help her keep on track with her schoolwork and all the other things she has going on in her life.

I am glad I could help her get organized using this simple tool.

Keeping it Simple

We often think that solutions are complicated or have to be found outside.  While in reality they often are right in front of us.

Never underestimate the things you know and how valuable they can be to someone else.
